I took this photograph while I was in Quimperlé, France, for a funeral. We were walking around the town at night when I came across the ruins of what I believe was an old church. The way the stone caught the light against the darkness immediately stood out to me, so I stopped and took a photograph.

I later edited the image heavily, pushing the contrast and darkness to make the structure feel almost detached from the real world. Looking at it now, it feels dark in more than just a visual sense. I was already carrying a lot of sadness and emptiness at the time, and I think some of that naturally found its way into the photograph.

There is something almost unsettling about the image. The ruined stone, the empty archway, and the darkness behind it make the structure feel abandoned, as though something happened there that we are not supposed to know about.

For me, the photograph reflects the emotions I was feeling that night, but I also like that it can become something completely different to someone else. It could feel ominous, like a warning or the remains of something long forgotten.

I think that is what I like most about photography. I can capture what I feel in a moment, while leaving enough behind for someone else to find their own meaning in it.
